SAR Team 16 is a multi-discipline, volunteer community-based Search & Rescue organization providing rapid, direct emergency response to the public at the local, state, and national levels by performing the following services:

  1. Wilderness Search and Rescue (SAR)
  2. Technical Rescue Operations
  3. Disaster Response and Relief
  4. Wildland Fire Prevention & Suppression
  5. Support/rehab to fire departments and law enforcement
  6. Education for the general public in emergency preparedness
  7. Public classes and community involvement
  8. Development and maintenance of community-based, volunteer units for rapid direct response to disasters and emergencies, providing standardized training, education and operational protocols that meet the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

SAR Team 16 is the designation of the Copperas Cove and Coryell County Response Unit of US-HERO. US-HERO is a non-profit, charitable organization without the support of tax dollars. Funding comes from membership dues, charity events, and grants. US-HERO is a partner with local and regional disaster relief organizations and performs services for governmental agencies and private disaster organizations, such as Red Cross.

US-HERO units are Emergency Response Units, with some being volunteer fire departments dealing with Wildland Fire. Our primary job is to conduct Search & Rescue (SAR) missions and respond to disasters by providing emergency relief and response under the Emergency Management System and the National Incident Management System (NIMS). All US-HERO personnel are qualified and operate according to the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) standards. We also help educate the public on emergency preparedness and hazard mitigation. US-HERO units also train and manage Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT), which respond to natural and other disasters.

Training and Readiness

SAR Team 16, as all other US-HERO response units, prides itself as being in a constant state of readiness. This means that we are not only geared up and ready to deploy at a moment’s notice, but we are also continually training and exercising all opportunities to further our education and ability to perform our duties.
